ABSTRACT

This Covid-19 pandemic brings uncertainty and may lead to mental problems. Yet, in this context, no study has examined the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and either anxiety or depression during pandemic among Indonesians. This study investigated the pathway between IU, anxiety and depression serially mediated by cognitive appraisals (perceived severity, controllability, and knowledge) and emotional and behavioural responses to COVID-19. Online psychological measures were administered to 406 participants, including the IUS-12, the DASS-21, cognitive appraisal scales, and emotional and behavioural response scale. An indirect pathway was found between IU and depression, and the effect was serially mediated by perceived of severity and emotional and behavioural responses to COVID-19. Perceived knowledge and perceived controllability of COVID-19 did not significantly contribute to the model. A similar pathway was found for IU predicting anxiety. As conclusion, IU represents a risk factor for heightened emotional and behavioural difficulties that eventually, could lead to either anxiety or depression during COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

This correlational study investigates the relationship between mobile phone use among elementary school students in Iran during the Covid-19 epidemic, and its effect on emotional-behavioural functioning and academic and social competencies. A researcher-devised questionnaire, and the Achenbach Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL)-parental version, was used to assess parental perception of the effects of mobile phone use. Questionnaires were completed by 500 parents, of which 470 were analysed. Findings showed a perceived relationship between the use of cyberspace (smartphone, tablet, games, and social networks) and anxious/depressed, withdrawn, somatic complaints, social problems, thought problems, attention problems, antisocial behaviour, and aggressive behaviour in children. Findings indicate that children's cultural context affects their exposure to online dangers, including receiving threatening images and messages, and cyberbullying;the effects in the current study being lower than the international average. It is recommended that there should be focus on promoting students' media literacy, and parental awareness. ©, Association of Educational Psychologists.

ABSTRACT

El confinamiento por COVID-19 afectó la vida de miles de infantes que cursan el nivel educación preescolar y trastocó su equilibrio psicológico y emocional. El estudio analiza los efectos del aislamiento prolongado en menores de edad que presentaron cambios en sus conductas de aprendizaje. El estudio asume un método de tipo transversal descriptivo, donde las jefas de familia, con hijos entre 3 y 5 años que cursaron el nivel de educación preescolar en una comunidad oaxaqueña, respondieron cuestionarios sobre los cambios que observaron en sus hijos desde el inicio de la pandemia. Se empleó la teoría de los efectos por confinamiento prolongado apoyada en estimadores estadísticos. Los resultados indicaron que las alteraciones observadas se manifestaron en la aparición de emociones desbordadas, problemas conductuales e hiperactividad. Se resalta que, según avanzó el confinamiento, aumentaron las dificultades psicológicas y emocionales que afectaron a los infantes.Alternate : Confinement by COVID-19 affected the lives of thousands of infants who attend preschool education, upsetting their psychological and emotional balance. The study analyzes the effects of prolonged isolation in minors who presented changes in their learning behaviors. The study assumes a descriptive cross-sectional method, where the heads of families, with children between 3 and 5 years old who attended the preschool level of education in an Oaxacan community, answered questionnaires about the changes they observed in their children since the beginning of the pandemic. The theory of effects by prolonged confinement supported by statistical estimators was used. The results indicated that the observed alterations were manifested in the appearance of overflowing emotions, behavioral problems and hyperactivity. It is highlighted that, as the confinement progressed, the psychological and emotional difficulties that affected the infants increased.

ABSTRACT

Purpose>The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between empathy and social responsibility (SR) practices in a university organization in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.Design/methodology/approach>The research was qualitative, using case study methodology. The case study was about the Brazilian organization Ânima Educação, which is the greatest among the five largest publicly traded education companies in Brazil. Secondary data collection and content analysis was carried out.Findings>As emotional response toward the problems caused by the pandemic, the company's leadership adopted an empathic behavior, allowing traces of its empathic culture to emerge. Empathy was expressed through the implementation of SR practices aimed at workers (policy of not firing in the first two months of the pandemic), at students (provision of technological apparatus, online classes, physical/psychological assistance and negotiation of late fees) and at the society (assistance to the elderly).Originality/value>It was concluded that empathy can be taken as the emotional motivator for companies to engage in SR practices, especially in extreme circumstances in society, as the economic and health challenges that the world is experiencing with the COVID-19 pandemic nowadays. SR practices, in turn, can foster even more empathy in organizations, mobilizing leaders and their respective groups in the creation and implementation of new practices, thus demonstrating that the relationship between empathy and SR practices is a “two-way street.”
